City that created history- Jhansi

Jhansi is the place from where basically I belong. It is a very small district which never would have been known if it did not have a historic significance. Jhansi has registered its name in golden letters in the books of Indian history. It is always remembered because of the queen of Jhansi, Maharani Laxmibai, who sacrificed her life for the freedom of our country.

Even today the wall of Jhansi fort details the valour and bravery that the queen showed when she died at her early 20’s. Jhansi fort is built on a hill giving you a glimpse of North Indian style of construction. The walls of Jhansi fort and palace are quite thick keeping the inside rooms cool.

Rani Laxmibai Palace shows the royalty and comfort with which rani lived. But in spite of all the comfort that she had, it is said that she took efforts to train the females and created the first women army in the India. The most popular part of the fort is that area from which the queen jumped with a horse in order to save her son.
Jhansi is also remembered for hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand who bagged many medals in hockey and made India win Olympics. It is said that after 1936 Berlin Olympics, Dhyan Chand was offered a Major title in the British Indian Army, German citizenship and an offer to be promoted to the rank of a Colonel by Adolf Hitler, but Dhyan Chand refused the offer because of his complete devotion and sincerity towards his country.

In the honour of Major Dhyan Chand Sports day is celebrated on his birthday on August 29 and his status has been built in over a hill which is visible even from a long distance.

Jhansi is also known for poets like Maithili Sharan Gupt who is known for his hindi poems, Chandra Shekhar Azad an Indian revolutionist who bravely fought during Indian revolution and Jhalkaribai who’s legend is famous for her valour that she showed as a part of the army that queen of Jhansi created.

Jhansi may be a small district but its historic significance has made it very attractive for tourists who have heard about the story and people behind these stories.
